Facilitated Group Workshops
Students and Recent Graduates
I tailor these workshops to address the particular marketplace needs of students and recent graduates. They can cover the entire career search process or individual segments depending on the identified content requested by the organization.
As we look at the job search process, we’ll consider questions such as:
- What does it take?
- What are the components of it?
- How can students and recent graduates best prepare for the process?
When I teach students and recent graduates about the job search, I can incorporate components of the entire job search journey or dial in to specific aspects such as mock interview role-play. This is typically where they have the most difficulty due to lack of previous experience and can find significant benefit.
If a very specific topic is requested, such as a one-hour session on resume writing, I will generally deliver a prepared presentation (e.g. PowerPoint) sharing the best practices geared toward that audience.
I support Case Western Reserve University’s School of Management, School of Engineering, and School of Medicine with facilitated workshops in resume writing, LinkedIn profile optimization, case and behavioral interviewing, and compensation negotiation.
Active Duty Service Members & Veterans
Although this audience shares the classification of current or past service in the Armed Forces, they tend to be largely varied in terms of their Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) code and employment experiences. For this reason, these workshops are usually different and more generalized than those for job seekers already in civilian roles.
Suitable workshop content includes:
- comprehensive job search process
- current employment marketplace landscape
- existing job search technology and how to maximize its use
- identifying and connecting with hiring managers
- evaluating differences between the civilian job search process and the military process
- translating capabilities into resumes
- using LinkedIn and traditional networking methods
- understanding the norms of the civilian employment sector
In order to customize the workshop format to best serve active duty servicemen and veterans, we may not do as much interview role-play in group workshops. Interview role-play is better suited for this group in an individual setting due to the variety of employment experience and the diversity of jobs they will be seeking. Additionally, with military personnel, I typically see more one-on-one and specific questions that are very unique to their MOS or the military-civilian employment transition.
I have the privilege of supporting The Honor Foundation, a career transition program for U.S. Special Operations Forces. I provide workshops on resume writing, including translating their unique experiences to the private sector and on LinkedIn profile optimization. I have provided services to cohorts based at Fort Liberty, Camp Lejuene, Eglin Air Force Base, and Fort Campbell, as well as virtual sessions that include service members stationed around the globe.
Mid Level and Senior Level Management
Although these management groups are at different levels in their careers, they share a significant characteristic that allows me to teach them simultaneously: they’ve had years of experience and understand what they do. Both groups need help to understand the new employment environment and landscape of finding a job.
In workshops for these management groups, we discuss the job search process and the role of technology in that process. Frequently, they’ve followed up on job leads through referrals and haven’t had to look for a job in earnest for quite some time. We’ll explore what’s available to them at the Mid-Level and Senior Level. Because these professionals are typically more credentialed and tenured, there is a greater need to be specific about the resources available to them. The tenor of these workshops is more professional and formal than my other sessions.
